Al Margolis has been an activist ("the godfather") in the 1980s American cassette underground through his cassette label Sound of Pig. He was co-founder of experimental music label Pogus Productions which he continues to run. Active under the name If, Bwana since 1984, he's been making music that has swung between fairly spontaneous studio constructions and more process-oriented composition. Margolis has earned an international reputation for his dadaistic noise music. This is what he has to say about They call me Bwana: "This was the first tape I recorded after having purchased a used 8-track reel to reel. The sound of it seems much cleaner and more spacious as I moved to recording single tracks as opposed to needing to multilayer tracks for bouncing as previously done on the 4-track. This for me also felt like 'step up' musically, like a really new thing. Or maybe my first real "mature" work... I had always liked my previous work, but this tape felt like a move in a new direction (I have no idea of that is actually true of course). I do remember one comment from someone who, when they heard I had an 8-track, wondered why I was still making noise, not making music - hmmm. Anyway, whether it was access to an 8-track or just what was going on in my listening etc., things did seem to shift after this; some longer works and more "process" oriented pieces started developing. But not on this tape."
